Bridging the Gap Between Classroom and Industry

As part of their academic journey at Jankidevi Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JDBIMS), SNDT Women's University, students participated in an enriching industrial visit to Dabur India Ltd., Silvassa and Filatex India Ltd., Dadra. The visit gave students valuable exposure to large-scale manufacturing organisations and helped them connect classroom concepts with real-world industry practices — from production planning, quality control and operations to teamwork, discipline and workplace safety. Below are reflections written by the students.

Download Full Report (PDF)On 11 August, we visited Silvassa as part of our industrial visit, exploring two very different organisations — Dabur India Ltd. and Filatex Textile. As management students, we often study concepts related to production, operations, finance and resources through textbooks and lectures, but seeing these concepts applied in a real working environment gave us a much clearer perspective.
Our Experience at Dabur India Ltd.
Before entering the production area, the company's HR head and representatives gave us a brief introduction to Dabur and its journey of around 140 years as one of India's leading FMCG companies — spanning oral care, hair care, health care, skin care, home care, food and beverages, with a portfolio of 250+ herbal and Ayurvedic products and brands such as Dabur Chyawanprash, Honey, Amla, Red Paste, Vatika and Real. Inside the manufacturing area we saw the production of toothpaste — large stainless-steel mixers, processing vessels, pipelines and automated machinery — along with the strong emphasis on hygiene and safety.
As a finance student, the machinery and infrastructure made me think about capital investment, cost management and capacity utilisation, while the need for continuous raw material highlighted the importance of inventory and working capital management. One of my biggest takeaways was that manufacturing is not only about machines — there is a lot of coordination between production, quality, maintenance, procurement, supply chain and finance.
Our Experience at Filatex Textile Company
Filatex gave us a completely different experience. We saw how threads — the basic raw material — gradually move through different machines to create the final textile product, maintaining pattern, quality and consistency. We even touched and understood the raw threads ourselves. From a finance point of view, we realised that raw material, machinery, labour, electricity, maintenance and wastage all have a cost attached, and even small improvements in efficiency can impact a company's cost and profitability.
The visit helped us connect our theoretical knowledge with real-life business operations, and ended with new knowledge, interesting experiences and great memories with friends.

Inside Dabur India Ltd.
Seeing how products such as toothpaste are manufactured on an industrial scale made me realise that something as simple as a product we use every day involves a well-organised process, technology, quality checks and the coordinated efforts of many people. The journey of a product does not simply begin and end on a store shelf — it passes through several carefully managed stages before reaching the consumer. The visit also helped me look at production and operations from a management perspective, showing how important coordination and precision are when thousands of products have to be produced while maintaining consistency and quality.
From Raw Material to Yarn: Filatex India Ltd.
The Filatex process involved transforming small raw-material components into long, continuous textile yarn. Watching the journey from the initial material to the finished yarn helped me appreciate the amount of technology, machinery and systematic processing involved — a reminder that even an ordinary-looking thread has a detailed manufacturing journey behind it. Beyond the machines, the conversations, laughter and little moments shared with classmates, along with Silvassa's greenery and refreshing atmosphere, made the trip truly memorable.

At Filatex India Ltd., Dadra, we explored the textile and polymer manufacturing industry and gained practical insights into production planning, process optimisation, quality assurance, resource utilisation and operational efficiency.
The visit allowed us to see management concepts in action — Human Resource Management, Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Quality Management and Organisational Behaviour became more meaningful through practical exposure. More importantly, it taught us the value of professionalism, teamwork, communication, discipline and workplace safety, helping us bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Download Full Report (PDF)Our Silvassa Industrial Visit was a perfect blend of learning and fun. The visit to Dabur enlightened us about the production process of various products, and being exposed to a vast platform where so many workers work in harmony gave us an insight into what goes into the making of the products we use every day. My visit to Filatex was fascinating too, as I saw the process of making polyester thread up close — for a management student, theory learned in class becomes much more meaningful when we see it practically.
Silvassa also proved to be a treat with its lovely greenery, fresh air, wonderful food and good friends. It was an amazing place where learning went hand in hand with fun on this college trip!
